Case Study 3
Axial flow piston compressor
Shell approached us for a more compact inline compressor that had the capabilities of a flat/opposing piston compressor but with significant reduction in size and reduction in pipework.
The solution was developed using a design similar to a 2 stroke radial engine. The input air was sucked through the central crankshaft and ported into the base of a retracted piston, the whole central core spun within an eccentric groove that the pistons moved across due to being flung out under centripetal force and the gas compressed and sent back into the crankshaft and sent on it’s way down the pipeline. Several 100k was invested into it but due to a collapse in oil prices it was shelved
